Walter Gross – Super Basic

Walter Gross returns with a new beat tape that pull on all his influences to create an unique, left of centre, experimental album.
“Super Basic” ranges from hard hitting, distorted beats to off kilter electronica and ambient noise. At times I’m reminded of fellow beat creator Al Lover, with the woozey wash of sounds on offer. It definitely makes for interesting listening.

Yuri Morozov – Strange Angels

“Strange Angels” is a compilation of 1970’s experimental & electronic music recorded in soviet Russia by Yuri Morozov. Banned by the KGB for its esoteric content and references to forbidden spiritual texts, Yuri recorded over 46 albums between the 1970s until his death in 2006. Only available on cassettes passed around in secret within the Russian music underground until now.
The music on offer here ranges from the beat driven “Shall Come Forth The Demons”and “Inexplicable (pt 4)” to the more ambient sounds of “Return To Atlantis” and the prog experiments such as “Gita Shakti”. Regardless of where Morozov takes you, the heavily experimental and early electronic sound is the overwhelming theme, creating music that is very much of it’s time yet it still sounds fresh today.
If you have any interest in early electronics, prog rock, psychedelic rock, experimental music the suggest you pick this album up, you won’t regret it!

Rodinia – Drumside Dreamside

NA5132-RODINIA-LP-sleeve_6.23.15.DKRodinia is the latest project from JJ Whitefield, the man behind Poets Of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers and Karl Hector & The Malcouns.
This time round Whitefield has taken inspiration from Krautrock and the more experimental side of post-hip hop funk.
Whitefield, along with collaborator, saxophonist and keyboardist Johannes
Schleiermacher have created an ambient, drum filled suite of music covering two sides of an album.
“all our vintage synths triggering everying with a vintage Korg rhythm box, absorbing some mind altering substances and jamming out.” is how the two put it themselves.
This is a definite must for all fans of Whitefields previous projects, even if it is on the more experimental side of things, there is still plenty of funk and heavy beats in the mix.
But it now from Now Again Records.
